How to Find and Remove Duplicates in Google Sheets

Google Sheets has a basic Data > Data cleanup > Remove duplicates tool, but it deletes rows straight away and can’t highlight duplicates, ignore extra spaces or accents, or show you which rows are unique. Dedupe Pro is a Google Sheets add-on that finds duplicate rows first and lets you decide what happens to them.

How to find and remove duplicates in Google Sheets

  1. Install Dedupe Pro from the Google Workspace Marketplace (Extensions > Add-ons > Get add-ons, search “Dedupe Pro”).
  2. Select your data and open Extensions > Dedupe Pro > Find duplicates.
  3. Choose which columns to compare – the whole row or only some columns (for example just the email).
  4. Choose what to find and what to do with it, then click Run.

What it can find

  • Duplicates, keeping the first occurrence
  • All duplicates, including the first one
  • Unique rows only
  • Distinct rows (uniques + first occurrences)

Smarter matching

  • Ignore extra spaces – “John  Smith ” matches “John Smith”
  • Match case on or off
  • Ignore accents – “José” matches “Jose”
  • Skip empty cells

What to do with duplicates

  • Highlight them in color
  • Mark them in a new status column
  • Delete the rows
  • Copy or move them to a new sheet (Pro)
  • Compare two sheets and find rows that appear in both (Pro)

There is also a one-click Remove duplicates in selection (quick) menu item for fast cleanup.

Free vs Pro

Finding, highlighting, marking and deleting duplicates is free. Pro adds copy/move to a new sheet and comparing two sheets, for a one-time payment – no subscription: get Dedupe Pro.

FAQ

Can I just highlight duplicates without deleting them? Yes – choose “Highlight in color”. Nothing is deleted.

Can I remove duplicates based on one column only? Yes – untick “Whole row” and pick the columns to compare.

Is it safe? The add-on only accesses the spreadsheet you open it in and your data never leaves Google Sheets. Privacy policy · Terms
